The Kendall family
Our family has been farming at Maple Farm in Kelsale for over 50 years.
Unlike a lot of farms, it has not changed much during this time. The fields are very small with high hedges around them. We have kept our ancient woodlands as well as planting several new woods in recent years. Our fields are surrounded by wide margins of native grasses and wildflowers that provide a habitat for plants, insects, birds and larger animals. Some years ago, we converted Maple Farm Kelsale to organic production.
We rely on the best bits of modern farming which have taken away many of the back-breaking jobs but otherwise Maple Farm would seem remarkably familiar to our ancestors. Fields of wheat and rye stand next to meadows with cattle and sheep. Our pigs live in the woodland which keeps them cool in summer and dry in winter. Our hens forage the rich pastures we have planted for them if not searching the woodland edges for insects. Their delicious eggs with dark yellow yolks are proof that they are finding a good diet. Our market garden produces a wide range of fruit and vegetables grown in soils fertilised by natural composts and plants such as clover.
One hundred years ago Maple Farm, along with its neighbours, would have been producing all of the fresh food that the local town and villages needed. We hope that this can be the case again.
In the fields
Our team is committed and knowledgeable. One trained as a chef, another advised a chef, Jamie Oliver. They have a strictly plot to plate approach, with an eye for the tastiest varieties and great ideas for our recipe collection.
Together with the Farm Manager, the team work to secure the smooth running of Maple Farm Kelsale, the best crops and highest standards of welfare for our livestock and poultry.
In the barn
Our big barn is a hive of activity, where vegetables are pre-packed for sale in the shops, where the eggs are graded and packed, and flours milled ready for distribution.
Harvesting is hands on for all the team and you’ll find many of them there to meet you directly at local Farmers’ Markets – they have followed our products on their journey and can share their story with you.
On the move
Our van is a familiar sight on the roads of East Suffolk, delivering produce to farm shops and outlets within our 15 mile radius.
In the office
The Soil Association and DEFRA have some exacting standards, and to retain our organic certificate every year the farm and its procedures undergo a thorough inspection.
Our office team work hard throughout the year to ensure that the paper trail on all produce is kept to the very highest degrees of accuracy.
